傳說中與外星人接觸的神秘「第51區」，其實是一個機密的間諜飛機建造與測試的地點。在喬治華盛頓大學國家安全檔案館的資深研究員Jeffrey T. Richelson於2005年要求後，迫使中央情報局解密了有關計劃以及軍事基地 51 區的歷史文件。而以揭露美國「稜鏡計畫」知名的前中情局員工史諾登，也曾表示他查詢過是否有外星人相關情報但一無所獲。
