非洲婦產科的醫生檢查過後表示，瑪麗姆懷多胞胎的原因可能是基因所致，每次生理周期的時候都會有多個卵子同時成熟。
早在生下18孩子的時候瑪麗姆就打算停止懷孕，但她的排卵數量非常大，如果不授精的話這些卵子越積越多不僅會對生殖系統造成影響，甚至會有生命危險。

Charles Kiggundu, a consultant gynecologist at Uganda's national referral hospital, Mulago Hospital, argues that although it is not common, some women can have such a number of births.
Kiggundu said there is a possibility of having more than two eggs being fertilized.
"They may be genetic factors, environmental factors but scientifically it is possible."
